Aristolochia americana has luxurient heart shaped foliage. The deep burgundy flowers are cloaked beneath the leaves. A great plant for growing on trellises or a garden tripod or tuteur. A host plant for the pipevine swallowtail larvae (see aditional photos). The vine will grow nicely in part shade or full sun, and was used in victorian days to shield porches from the hot midday sun. It does not become overly aggressive, and responds well to pruning.
