Celastrus scandens, commonly called American Bittersweet or Bittersweet, blooms mostly in June and is commonly found on rich, well-drained soils of woodlands.  It is rare in nature, now, as the highly invasive Asiatic bittersweet has become a serious competitive threat.  You can tell the difference by the postion of the fruits (berries). I n the Asiatic bittersweet, they form in the axiles of the branches and in the American species, they are terminal, at the ends of the branches.
