Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Aurea'
Golden Hinokii Cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Aurea' is a fine, pyramidal tree form of Hinoki Cypress with an open branching pattern and bright, golden foliage (especially when new) intermixed with glossy green. A mature specimen, after 10 years of growth, can measure 10 feet (3 m) tall and 4.5 feet (1.5 m) wide, an annual growth rate of 8 to 12 inches. It is disease and problem free. Glorious in the filtered shade or forest garden and tolerant of many soil types, and makes a nice privacy/wind screen. The Golden Hinoki Cypress can reach a height of 20 feet or more and 10 to 15 feet wide at its base. Its gracefully spreading branches are cloaked in sprays of golden-yellow new foliage that contrasts beautifully with the mature, rich green interior foliage. The attractive reddish brown bark has a beautiful texture peeking through the foliage for contrast and color variation. The Golden Hinoki is a very long-lived evergreen.
Beautiful in the shade or Japanese Garden or in an allee.
