Bromeliads are in the Pineapple Family and include plants from the rainforest to deserts to the high Andes, even the Spanish Moss of the Gulf Coast. They are usually epiphytes, and whole ecosystems can develop in their rosettes that capture and retain rainwater. They are very colorful and easy to grow.

Agapanthus africanus is typically known as Lily of the Nile, although they are not true lilies (they are in the Amaryllis family) and most are native to South Africa, from the Cape of Good Hope to the Limpopo River. In the Spring they produce a most flamboyant display of blue flowers.

The mother plant of our Alocasia macrorrhiza had leaf blades 4 feet long and the whole plant was 15 feet in diameter. If you keep this going in a bright window over the winter, you might approximate this measurement, with a lot of humus, water and filtered light. Great for poolside or patio.

This plant is just crazy fun! Nope, not a native here, but a real conversation piece. It is best grown in evenly moist, fertile, well-draining, humusy loams in part sun to part shade. A unique specimen for containers, mixed borders, or greenhouses.

Brassia verrucosa is a prolific bloomer and easy to grow. It is native to Central American where it festoons trees in the mid-altitude mountain highlands. Flowers are approximately 3" tall, the quietest light green color flecked with dark red patterns, and a cream-white lip. An intermediate grower, but cold tolerant.

A lovely, tropical, flowering plant in the Amaryllidaceae, native to western Colombia and western Ecuador. With the flowers, it is about 2 feet tall. It is a natural hybrid between E. moorei and E. sanderi which produces porcelain-like, fragrant flowers.

They trap debris in the shield (sterile frond) that forms the back, and the "staghorns", or fertile fronds produce the spores with which they reproduce.

Grown for their strongly perfumed, waxy, tubular, usually white flowers, Stephanotis is an evergreen, tropical vine with a scattered distribution in several tropical and subtropical regions.

Bird of Paradise is very popular as an ornamental plant. It was first introduced at the Royal Botanic Gardens, at Kew in 1773. Since then, it has been widely introduced around the world, including the Americas and Australia, growing well in any area that is sunny and warm.
