Platycerium species
These are beautiful epiphytes that usually grow on the trunks of rainforest trees, their roots absorbing water and nutrients from the forest above. They trap debris in the shield (sterile frond) that forms the back, and the "staghorns", or fertile fronds produce the spores with which they reproduce. We carry Platycerium alcicorne (mainland variety) which is native to the forests of eastern Africa. They are real conversation pieces! We also have a few Platycerium bifurcatum, Platycerium elephantotis (angloense) and Platycerium superbum plants in various sizes
They can be grown outside in frost-free areas, or in greenhouses and sunrooms (or bright locations in buildings), and moved outside during the warmer months, typically in a shaded location. Grow them on cedar boards, or in wall planters (better for larger specimens).
Prices listed are subject to change, based upon size change and availability.
We are a small local nursery with limited shipping capability. We will do our best to ship smaller material (usually 1 or 2 gallon), although we can sometimes ship larger plants with the pots removed.
We have some species that are not listed, as we have too few of them to make a full listing plausible. You can always inquire.
We will consider contract growing an order with appropriate advance notice and availability of seed, cuttings or lining out stock.
