Thuja occidentalis is an evergreen coniferous tree, in the cypress family (Cupressaceae), which is native to the Northeast United States and southeasern Canada, but widely cultivated as an ornamental plant. The species was first described by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753, and the binomial name remains current. It makes a great screen and tolerates wet conditions.

Common names include white cedar (in the United Kingdom), Northern White Cedar, Yellow Cedar, Eastern White Cedar, Swamp cedar, American Arborvitae or just Arborvitae). The name arborvitae is particularly used in the horticultural trade in the United States. The name 'Arbor vitae', is Latin for "tree of life" - due to the supposed medicinal properties of the sap, bark and twigs. Despite its common names it does not belong to the cedar genus (Cedrus), nor is it related to the Australian White cedar, Melia azedarach.

We carry a beautiful cultivar, known as 'Emerald Green Arborvitae' ('Smaragd'), a tidy, compact variety that is great between properties where you don't have a lot of space, or where you just want an elegant stand alone specimen.

Information

Prices listed are subject to change, based upon size change and availability.

We are a small local nursery with limited shipping capability. We will do our best to ship smaller material (usually 1 or 2 gallon), although we can sometimes ship larger plants with the pots removed.

We have some species that are not listed, as we have too few of them to make a full listing plausible. You can always inquire.

We will consider contract growing an order with appropriate advance notice and availability of seed, cuttings or lining out stock.
